Video folly

Shed
04/06/2008This old shed escaped demolission by intervention of artist Ida van der Lee ( www.idavanderlee.nl )who later gave me the assignment to give the shed a second life. I turned it into a boat so it could travel by water towards the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen, the new owner of the shed. This museum is focused on the culture of the former Zuiderzee. The shed was part of "de zouttocht" ( www.dezouttocht.nl ) , the shed has also been used on different festifals, and was part of a theatre scenery. Heroes
01/05/2008The city of Delfzijl has ofteb been used as a hide out by three Dutch naval heroes(Adm. De Ruyter, Prince Maurits and Piet Heyn. Those were the less heroic days of these men not specifically mentioned in history books. Even heroes need some time for themselves once in a while and three of the most famous ones in The Netherlands choose Delfzijl for that purpose. To commemorate that fact these giant busts were placed on a round about of this ancient town

Wijk Cinema Tent
01/08/2007Flexible highly visible inflatable tent, designed for quick presentations, movies, theatre or lectures on a open air location. The tent is cut in such a way that parts of it are folded to the inside so that it keeps in place. It gives the tent its specific character. It is used on a lot of locations in Holland and also on the Salone del Mobile in Milan. Artificial Moon
01/08/2006This scalemodel of an artificial moon with a diameter of one kilomeater will change the face of the earth. It is ment to be blown up in the dessert where the air inside gets heated up during daytimeby the sun. When the evening comes and the temperature drops, the artificial hot air moon will slowly rise. 01/07/2006In 2006 the city of Groningen handed out The Hendrik de Vries Price to writer and poet Toon Tellegen. The price, a figure of an ant, was custome made for him. In many of his stories the ant plays a important role.

Regret Machine
01/06/2006With this machine one can replace trees that have been cut down. A formerly irreversible act as cutting down a tree can easily be undone. With this machine regret becomes a thing of the past. The machine was exhibited by Kunstenlab Deventer www.kunstenlab.nl and shown in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo. www.kmm.nl

Streaming Time
01/11/2005A liquid of iron powder and oil flows over a metal plate with magnetized spots. On these spots the stream is interupted and iron powder sticks together and makes a black spot. Brick factory
01/06/2005Small handy craft brick factory on an official construction site for family homes. The instalation/factory showed that it is posible to make building materials with natural resources on the building location, in this case clay. War of Furniture
01/02/2005Randomly moving furniture for a house with no people. Chairs, tables and a sofa move around the living room like bumping cars at a fun fair. Every ten seconds they take in a different position. During these maneuvers, the furniture gets heavily damaged. They become used furniture without human interaction

Box tent (inflatable festival tent)
01/06/2004This tent was designed and made to house the Boxing machine during several festifals in the Netherlands. The tent, which gets its stregth from high pressure air, weighs almost nothing altthough its size is coniderable. It can easily be managed by one person.

Exhibition The Intense City Groningen
16/04/2004Design and Building up an exhibition about 22 possible new building projects in the city of Groningen(NL). The basis of the exhibition was a map of the city. Parts of it where worked out in scale 1:1000 and the scale models of the buildings in 1:100. Everything was placed on the map on the spots where it should be build. Design and building up in cooperation with Tjeerd Veenhoven.

Light emitting roof tiles (roof tiles with internal lightning)
03/01/2004A roof fitted out with these tiles can be used for collourful light shows, images and text. It lights up in the dark and becomes visible. It can be used for commercial purposes, or just to let the rest of the family know that dinner isready.

Flexible house
15/07/2003This object is taken the concept of the space-efficient- tent a little further. The levels of the house that are in use are inflated and the space that isn,t stays empty. In this way the volume of this house stays at a minimum. The different functions of each level is made visible in an iconic way. Driving currant loaf
15/06/2003The driving currant loaf was the second funnybakery action. The funny bakers coverd a chickenfence in the shape of a small car with current dough. Boxing (fighting game played by two persons)
01/12/2002Boxing is an interactive fighting game played by way of presing tiles to move a cart with a boxing glove towards your opponent. Other tiles can be used to make a hitting motion. The Boxing machine is inspired on interactive computer games except that, in this game, a hit really hurts. The Boxing made a tour along a lot of festivals in Holland.

Space Maker (interactiv moving tent)

Tribute to the Poffert

Air Bridge (inflateble bridge construction)
01/09/2001The Air Bridge is made out of textile and gets in shape by compresed air. No hard materials were used for the construction. It was made as a testcase for the idea to make multylayered inflatable buildings. Ferry-Go-Round (Theatrical ferry)
15/08/2001The Ferry-Go-Round was specialy build for the Noorderzon Festival in Groningen(NL). It was used as a ferry on the pond in the park where the festival was held. During the journey the ferry inflates itself, radiates light and turns around its axis. The short voyage over the pond became a theatrical event. High-Point (self service drug addiction point)
01/06/2000High-Point is the design for a self-service drug vending machine. Drug addicted people can use it for their dayly injections. The instruction reads as follows: Put your arm in, select one drug or a cocktail of 'products' and press on inject. This is a fastfood machine for junky life. The machine was the result if an idea to give the junkies in a park in Groningen (NL) a more peaceful life.

Spywagon
15/09/1998This wagon is a verhicle designed to spy on the board of directors of the art academi Minerva in Groningen (NL). Students, teachers and other interested people could spy into the offices on the first floor of the building. It was used at a moment that the board of directors were discussing a new economic structure and everybody was interested in the outcome. www.academieminerva.nl

Soapstonemachine
01/08/1998This is a symbolic machine made out of soapstone. The machine recycles the big mountain of waiststone from the guarry near by Joensuu (SF). The proportions of the wheels show the chemical composition of the stone. The rough stone above will be reduced to rubble by these wheels. This project was made in collaboration with Erik Botman.

Numbers (Wild flashing numbers)
01/06/1998On three independent flashing lightboxes, we see numbers appear and disapear in a raid motion. These lightboxes where used for the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the art academy Minerva in the city of Groningen. Traffic Jam (Floating traffic jam made up of colourfull toy cars)
01/05/1998Floating parade of toycars in a canal in the city of Meppel (NL),mirroring the real traffic jam on the street next to it.
Untill the introduction of the automobile this old canal was the most important trade route into the town of Meppel. The boats have long been replaced by trucks moving along the motorway. Part of the canal has been filled up with sand in fafour of this motorway. In turn , during weekdays the motorwa fills up with cars. This artwork reflects playfully on that situation.

Flowerpot (giant flowerpot turns tree into houseplant)
01/05/1995This wooden large scale flowerpot could be placed around the trunk of a tree on a marked scuare and turned it into a giant houseplant. The flowerpot toured in the city of Groningen (NL) on a special wagon and the festiveritual of potting trees and turning them into giant houseplants was repeated sevral times. As a side effect, off course, the side walk was turned into a windostill and the city itself became a livingroom.
